After a month of outrage, protests, and unrest from the community, Reddit has finally flipped the switch to shut down some third-party apps.
Apollo, an iOS app that became a rallying point for the recent protests against Reddit’s imminent API pricing, no longer loads any content from the platform. When I open it up, all I see is a spinning wheel. Developer Christian Selig confirmed to me that Reddit is the one that turned things off, not him: “would have been nice to have been given a time,” he says in an email to The Verge.
Well, looks like Reddit pulled the plug a little early. Apollo started crashing, but I just manually revoked my token and it looks like it fixes the crashing, but no more Reddit access haha. Those folks are fun to…

Blocking News Stories: Google’s Response to New Canadian Law

Google has announced that it will block Canadian news articles from its search engine and other services in response to a new law that would require tech companies to pay publishers for content. This move comes after Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, also vowed to blackout Canadian publishers on its platforms, stating that the law is “fundamentally flawed”.
The Canadian government passed the Online News Act last week, which aims to compel tech companies to negotiate compensation deals with news organizations for distributing links to news stories. Google and Meta have been engaged in a battle with the Canadian government over this law, arguing that they already drive web traffic to news sites and should not be forced to pay.
Supporters of the legislation argue that it could provide much-needed support to the struggling news industry, which has seen the closure of over 450 news outlets in Canada since 2008. They claim that digital platforms and social media have gained control over advertising revenues, diverting them away from local news organizations.
According to government estimates, the new law could inject around $329 million into the Canadian news industry, which has been grappling with layoffs and downsizing in recent years.
Canada’s Online News Act was modeled after a similar effort in Australia, where Meta and Google initially blocked news articles before eventually striking deals with news publishers after tense negotiations. This approach has sparked a bill in California, where tech companies have also threatened to pull out all news content if forced to pay publishers.
While major publishers in Canada support the new law, some media observers and tech writers have expressed concerns. Casey Newton, a tech writer, argues that a tax on displaying links could “effectively break the internet” if applied to the entire web. Critics have also questioned the lack of transparency regarding who will receive compensation from tech companies and raised concerns about potential system manipulation by disinformation sites.
Press advocates warn that blocking news articles in response to the new law could have a detrimental effect on civil society and the public’s access to credible journalism. Liz Woolery, who leads digital policy at PEN America, an organization that supports freedom of expression, expressed disappointment at Google and Meta’s decision. She emphasizes the importance of ensuring public access to news, especially in the face of increasing disinformation.
In conclusion, Google’s decision to block Canadian news articles in response to the new law reflects the ongoing battle between tech companies and the Canadian government. While supporters believe the law will provide much-needed support to the news industry, critics raise concerns about potential implications for the internet and lack of transparency. The impact on civil society and the public’s access to credible journalism remains a significant concern.

The number of satellites whizzing by over our heads at any moment is staggering, and growing at a rapid rate as new constellations are launched. But sometimes it’s the old birds that are the most interesting, as is the case with some obsolete but still functional military communications satellites, which thanks to a lack of forethought are largely unsecured and easily exploitable. And all that’s needed to snoop in on them is a cheap ham radio and something like this simple and portable satcom antenna.
As proof of the global nature of the radio hobby, the design in the video below by Brit [Tech Minds] borrows heavily from previous work by Italian ham [Ivo Brugnera (I6IBE)], which itself was adapted to use 3D-printed parts in a German blog post a few years ago. The common thread is the use of tape measures for the elements of the aptly named turnstile antenna, a tried and true material for lightweight, foldable antennas that amateur radio enthusiasts have been using for years. The antenna is similar in design to the classic three-element Yagi-Uda, with a crossed pair of driven elements in the middle of a boom that also supports a reflector and a director. Strips of tape measure material are held to the 20-mm aluminum tubing boom with 3D-printed brackets. A phasing harness of precisely cut coax cable connects to the driven elements and runs down the boom; the quarter-wavelength loop serves to introduce the 90° phase shift needed for the circularly polarized signal from the satellites.
A quick scan with a vector antenna analyzer showed just how well this antenna performs on the 220-MHz band, and the antenna was easily able to pick up the Brazilian satellite pirate’s chatter. The tape measure elements make the antenna easy to handle and foldable, not to mention pretty cheap to build. And what’s not to love about that?

Ever heard the urban legend about how the original Nintendo Game Boy survived a bomb? I have reason to believe that’s not true. But until recently, the flagship Nintendo Store at New York City’s Rockefeller Center housed an original Game Boy that, it claimed, was damaged in a bombing during Operation Desert Storm.
We just confirmed with Nintendo New York that, after many years on display, the Gulf War Game Boy is no longer there. VideoGameArt&Tidbits was the first to report the news; they say a worker told them it was returned to Nintendo’s US headquarters in Washington state.
If it’s true, and if it’s not coming back, we’re hoping that Nintendo will display it somewhere else. But just in case it…
Algorithmic Influence Exposed: How Meta Utilizes AI to Shape Content on Facebook and Instagram

In the ever-evolving world of social media, algorithms play a crucial role in determining what content we see and interact with. Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has recently taken a step towards transparency by shedding light on the inner workings of its AI-powered algorithms. In this article, we will delve into how Meta uses artificial intelligence (AI) to shape the content on its platforms, providing you with a better understanding of the process and empowering you to have more control over the content you consume.
Meta’s commitment to openness, transparency, and accountability is the driving force behind its decision to demystify its social media algorithms. Nick Clegg, Meta’s President of Global Affairs, emphasizes the importance of addressing concerns about powerful technologies like AI through openness. In a recent blog post, Clegg states, “With rapid advances taking place with powerful technologies like generative AI, it’s understandable that people are both excited by the possibilities and concerned about the risks. We believe that the best way to respond to those concerns is with openness.”
Meta has introduced “service cards” that provide valuable insights into how content is ranked and recommended on Facebook and Instagram. These cards offer a comprehensive overview of the AI systems behind various features, including the Feed, Stories, Reels, and other content discovery mechanisms. By examining these cards, users can gain a deeper understanding of the algorithms’ inner workings and make informed decisions about the content they encounter.
One of the prominent system cards focuses on Instagram Explore, a feature that showcases users photo and reels content from accounts they don’t follow. The card outlines a three-step process that powers the automated AI recommendation engine:
Gather Inventory: The system collects public Instagram content, such as photos and reels, that adhere to Meta’s quality and integrity rules.
Leverage Signals: The AI system analyzes how users engage with similar content or interests, using these “input signals” to inform the recommendation process.
Rank Content: Based on the previous steps, the AI system ranks the content, prioritizing items that are predicted to be of greater interest to the user and placing them higher in the Explore tab.
Users have the ability to influence this process by saving content they enjoy, indicating to the system that they would like to see similar content in the future. Conversely, marking content as “not interested” helps the system filter out similar content from the user’s recommendations. For those who prefer to explore content that hasn’t been personalized by the algorithm, selecting “Not personalized” in the Explore filter allows them to view reels and photos that are not specifically tailored to their preferences.
Meta aims to empower users by providing them with tools and features that allow them to better understand and control the content they encounter on Facebook and Instagram. The “Why Am I Seeing This?” feature, which has been available for some time, is being expanded to cover Facebook Reels, Instagram Reels, and Instagram’s Explore tab. This feature enables users to click on individual reels and gain insights into how their previous activity may have influenced the algorithm to display that particular piece of content.
Additionally, Instagram is testing a new feature that allows users to mark recommended reels as “Interested,” indicating their desire to see more similar content in the future. This feature complements the existing option to mark content as “Not Interested,” which has been available since 2021. These features put users in the driver’s seat, granting them the ability to shape their content recommendations based on their preferences and interests.
Meta is also taking steps to facilitate research and provide access to public data from Instagram and Facebook. In the coming weeks, Meta plans to roll out its Content Library and API, a suite of tools designed for researchers. This comprehensive resource will allow researchers to search, explore, and filter public content, enabling them to gain valuable insights into the platforms. To ensure privacy and compliance, researchers will be required to apply for access through approved partners, starting with the University of Michigan’s Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research. Meta’s Content Library and API will provide unparalleled access to publicly-available content, furthering the company’s commitment to data-sharing and transparency.
Meta’s decision to provide detailed explanations of its AI algorithms stems from both its commitment to transparency and external factors such as regulatory scrutiny. The explosive growth of AI technology has drawn attention from regulators worldwide, who are concerned about the collection, management, and utilization of personal data by these systems. While Meta’s algorithms are not new, the company’s past mismanagement of user data during the Cambridge Analytica scandal and the public’s demand for greater transparency in platforms like TikTok have underscored the need for increased communication and openness.

Compliance Chief at Prominent Chinese Fintech Company Accused of Insider Trading
Written by Jun 30, 2023, 7:02 pm

The SEC and federal prosecutors in New York have filed insider trading charges against the compliance chief of a Chinese fintech firm. Chief compliance officer for LianLian Global (USA) Steven Teixeira pleaded guilty to federal charges in exchange for cooperation. Teixeira’s actions have prompted worries about the legitimacy of the Chinese fintech business and the need for tougher controls, even if the SEC charges against him are still pending.
Teixeira is accused of breaking into his girlfriend’s laptop and accessing confidential information, such as Broadcom’s plan to acquire VMware for $65 billion in 2022. His partner worked as an executive assistant at an undisclosed New York City investment firm, and she had access to highly confidential Outlook calendars and data. According to reports, Teixeira profited from this knowledge by sharing it with a business partner.
Teixeira’s exclusive knowledge included details about term sheets and upcoming deals for other major businesses, such as VMware’s acquisition and Thoma Bravo’s proposed purchase of Proofpoint. Allegedly, Teixeira made over $730,000 in earnings by trading on this private information thanks to his actions.
Teixeira’s alleged girlfriend, who is not identified in the complaint, asked him to keep an eye on her work email while she was out of the office and call her if anything urgent came up. These are the times when Teixeira gained access to the confidential information, which he then reportedly shared with his friend Jordan Meadow.
For “hundreds of thousands” in commissions, it is said that investment advisor Meadow utilized confidential information to advise his customers on lucrative opportunities. Teixeira and Meadow have been indicted on federal insider trading accusations.
As evidenced by the allegations against Teixeira and Meadow, insider trading can have devastating effects. By giving certain people an unfair advantage over others, insider trading threatens the fairness and integrity of financial markets. Losses for individuals who aren’t in the know can be substantial, and trust in the financial system suffers as a result.
According to Scott Thompson, regional director of the SEC’s Philadelphia office, Teixeira and Meadow’s actions were “brazen betrayals of trust.” The companies they steal from and the reputation of the whole Chinese fintech industry suffer as a result of their misuse of confidential information for personal benefit.
Concerns regarding the lack of oversight and accountability in the Chinese fintech industry are brought to light by the case involving Teixeira and Meadow. It is critical that adequate controls be in place to avoid insider trading and other fraudulent actions as the sector continues to grow and spread globally.
Strong compliance programs that encourage openness, honesty, and moral action must be developed jointly by regulators and business leaders. Insider trading can be detected and avoided with the use of stringent controls and monitoring systems. Training and educating staff on the importance of compliance and ethical behaviour should also be a top priority for businesses.

Yesterday, Reuters broke the news that the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) will declare aspartame as “possibly carcinogenic” next month. However, that doesn’t mean you have to raid your pantry and toss any sugar-free foods containing the artificial sweetener.
Why? Because this is not the agency that consumers should listen to with regard to food safety. The IARC only assesses the hazard of a given substance, not the risk. For example, there is a hazard of a meteor destroying the Earth or the sun causing skin cancer. But that’s not what matters to the average person. What matters is the actual risk of a hazard happening. There are thousands of meteors in space, but only the ones hurtling…

In today’s digital age, cloud adoption has become a necessity for businesses to stay ahead of the game. However, many organizations struggle with adapting and optimizing their infrastructure while delivering outstanding services to their customers. That’s where Cloud Adoption Frameworks come into play, offering a structured approach to cloud migration and management. In this article, we’ll delve into one such framework – the AOD Model – which helps businesses balance connections between on-premises and cloud environments for hybrid infrastructures. Let’s explore how this model can help modernize your IT operations and drive business results.
The AOD Model
The AOD Model, or the Adapt-Optimize-Deliver Model, is a cloud adoption framework/strategy designed to help businesses successfully migrate their operations to the cloud and optimize their hybrid infrastructures.
At its core, the AOD Model consists of three essential layers: The Foundation Layer, which establishes a solid foundation for teams to build on; The Migration Layer, which helps businesses plan and execute successful cloud migrations; and The Modernization Layer, which provides tools and strategies for optimizing applications in the cloud.
One of the most significant benefits of using the AOD model is that it offers guidance on balancing connections between different environments. This enables companies to maintain secure connections with legacy systems while taking advantage of all modern technologies offer.
In addition, implementing this adaptable framework can help organizations streamline their processes through automation and other best practices. By breaking down complex tasks into manageable steps, businesses can improve efficiency while reducing downtime during migration.
With its focus on balancing connectivity across multiple environments and streamlining processes through automation and best practices –the AOD model presents an excellent option for companies looking to adopt or optimize their use of Google Cloud services.
The Three Layers of the AOD Model
The AOD model is a comprehensive cloud adoption framework that helps organizations to successfully migrate, operate, and optimize their workloads on the cloud. The model consists of three layers – Application, Operations, and Data.
The first layer of the AOD model is the Application layer which focuses on helping organizations adapt their applications for running in a cloud environment. This involves identifying which applications can be migrated to the cloud and how they can be modernized to take advantage of cloud-native features such as auto-scaling and serverless computing.
The second layer is the Operations layer which addresses operational concerns such as governance, security, compliance, monitoring, and management. This layer ensures that IT operations align well with business objectives by providing an agile foundation for managing hybrid infrastructures.
There’s the Data Layer – where data becomes more accessible through migration into Google Cloud services like BigQuery or leveraging Anthos configurations alongside GCP services like Kubernetes Engine clusters, so you have balanced connections between multiple clouds under a single-pane-of-glass view.
Each layer of this framework provides guidelines for optimizing resources while reducing costs incurred during cloud migration projects, thereby enabling businesses to deliver efficiently on their mission-critical objectives across all platforms involved in hybrid infrastructure deployments requiring significant orchestration challenges at scale..
The Benefits of the AOD Model
The AOD Model is a well-crafted framework that offers numerous benefits to organizations in their cloud adoption journey. The model helps companies to better understand the various stages of cloud migration and how they can adapt, optimize, and deliver their services on hybrid infrastructures.
One of the most significant advantages of using the AOD Model is its ability to enable balanced connections between different components within an organization’s IT infrastructure. This allows for seamless communication between applications, data centers, and public clouds, enhancing overall efficiency.
The AOD Model also provides a standardized approach toward cloud migration planning, enabling organizations to effectively manage costs associated with this process while reducing operational complexities. With clear guidelines available through each implementation stage, an organization has greater control over its resources and budget throughout the entire project lifecycle.
Additionally, businesses can improve security protocols around data protection policies by implementing the AOD Model as part of an organization’s cloud adoption strategy. The framework offers a comprehensive approach to identifying risks associated with transferring sensitive information across different environments, which helps enhance compliance requirements.
Adopting the AOD Model brings numerous benefits, such as improved agility when responding rapidly to market changes or competitive pressures. Additionally, increased flexibility through hybrid solutions leads to more efficient use of resources resulting in cost savings for your business over time.
How to Implement the AOD Model
Implementing the AOD Model requires a comprehensive approach. The framework provides clear guidance on how to adapt, optimize, and deliver hybrid infrastructures seamlessly. Here are some critical steps to consider when implementing the AOD model.
Firstly, assess your current infrastructure and identify areas that need improvement. This will help you determine where the AOD framework can be applied effectively.
Secondly, establish a clear strategy for cloud migration that aligns with your business goals and objectives. This should include identifying which applications should be migrated first and determining the right cloud platform for each application.
Thirdly, create a balanced connection between your on-premises infrastructure and public or private clouds. This will ensure that data is transferred smoothly across all environments.
Fourthly, use automation tools to streamline processes such as deployment, scaling, monitoring, and security management. These tools will help you maximize efficiency while minimizing manual errors.
Monitor your performance metrics regularly to ensure optimal results. Continuously evaluate your progress against established benchmarks so you can make necessary adjustments along the way.
By following these steps in implementing the AOD Model in Google Cloud adoption frameworks, businesses can get one step closer towards delivering better services through optimized hybrid infrastructures without any hassle.
Conclusion
The AOD Model is a comprehensive framework that can guide organizations through the process of cloud adoption. It provides a structured approach to cloud migration and helps companies adapt, optimize, and deliver hybrid infrastructures.
By breaking down the cloud adoption process into three layers – Adopt, Optimize, and Deliver — the AOD Model makes it easier for organizations to identify their goals and prioritize their efforts. The model also emphasizes the importance of balanced connections between different systems to ensure seamless integration.
Implementing the AOD Model requires careful planning and collaboration between various stakeholders within an organization. However, by following this framework’s guidelines, businesses can successfully migrate to Google Cloud while minimizing risks and maximizing benefits.
